It starts as a hot line down the back of the leg. By week three, it's a career decision. Here's how the pedal-and-seat combination pinches a nerve deeper than any muscle knot — and what actually turns the current off.
It doesn't feel like a muscle. That's the first clue. A pulled hamstring aches. Sciatica burns. It runs a line — hip to butt to calf — like someone drew it with a highlighter. If you know, you know.
What sciatica actually is
The sciatic nerve is the thickest cord in your body. It leaves the low back, threads through the deep hip, and runs down each leg. Two places pinch it: a compressed disc in the lumbar spine, or a tight piriformis muscle in the deep glute. Sitting eleven hours a day makes both worse.
The wallet test
Sit on your wallet. That two-inch tilt of your pelvis? Enough to compress the piriformis and jam the nerve. Left pocket for years is one of the most common trucker sciatica triggers. Move it to the shirt pocket or center console today.
The wallet in your back pocket is the cheapest surgeon's bill nobody talks about.
The self-test (2 minutes)
- Lie on your back on the sleeper bunk.
- Cross the painful leg — ankle over the opposite knee.
- Pull the bottom thigh toward your chest.
- If it lights up the back-of-leg pain, it's piriformis. If it lights up the low back, it's discal. Both matter.
The 4-move unwind
- Figure-4 stretch — the test above, held 60 sec each side.
- Standing hamstring stretch — foot on the fuel step, chest tall, 45 sec each.
- Knee-to-chest on the bunk — 30 sec each side.
- Cat-cow — 10 slow reps to mobilize the whole spine.
When it's not sciatica anymore
If it's numb, if you can't feel your foot on the pedal, if you have any bladder or bowel change — that's not a stretch situation. That's an ER situation. Cauda equina syndrome is rare but it's the one nerve problem you don't wait on.
Prevention on the road
- Wallet out of the back pocket. Forever.
- Lumbar roll behind the low back, not the mid-back.
- 90-second flow every fuel stop.
- Sleep on your side, pillow between the knees.
