The Number That Runs the Truck

A1C, insulin, and driving with diabetes.

A single blood draw quietly decides your next two years behind the wheel. Here's what A1C actually measures, the DOT thresholds nobody explains, and the food-and-movement plan that walks the number back down.

Type 2 diabetes doesn't disqualify you from driving. But it changes everything about how you plan your career. And it can quietly disqualify you if you don't understand the number.

What A1C actually is

A1C is the average of your blood sugar over the last 90 days, expressed as a percentage. Under 5.7% is normal. 5.7 to 6.4% is prediabetes. 6.5% and up is diabetes. Every 1% drop in A1C cuts your risk of complications by roughly 20-30%.

The DOT thresholds

  • Non-insulin diabetes, A1C under 10 → typically clear for a 2-year card.
  • Non-insulin, A1C 10 or higher → most examiners shorten the card until it drops.
  • Insulin-treated → requires an ITDM form (Insulin-Treated Diabetes Mellitus) plus a quarterly log. Still a legal CDL. Just more paperwork.
  • Uncontrolled with any hypoglycemic episodes → disqualifying until stable.
Diabetes doesn't take your career. Ignoring it does.

The 4 rules that move A1C the most

  • Cut liquid sugar. One 32 oz soda a day can add 0.5 to your A1C.
  • Walk 10 minutes after every meal. Muscle contraction pulls sugar out of the blood.
  • Protein first. Every meal, start with the meat/eggs/fish. Then vegetables. Carbs last.
  • Sleep 7 hours. Poor sleep spikes glucose the next morning by 15-20%.

Trucker food that actually works

  • Grilled chicken breast + green beans + brown rice — the DOT diabetic default.
  • Hard-boiled eggs and jerky (low-sodium) between meals.
  • Fresh fruit — one piece, not the whole cup.
  • Coffee black or with unsweetened milk. Not the caramel one.

The scan-and-log rhythm

Log every meal in FreightFit — the scanner grades net carbs and flags spikes. Log your fasting glucose every morning. When the pattern's on your screen, the fix gets obvious. Guessing is what got you here. Data is what gets you out.
